Mundelein, Illinois, suspected murder-suicide leaves five dead

Five people, including three men and two women, were found dead from apparent close-range gunshot wounds in a Mundelein, Illinois, home late Sunday night. The discovery was made during a welfare check requested by a relative calling from California.

Authorities believe the incident was a murder-suicide involving individuals in a domestic or family relationship. While official identities have not been released, neighbors identified the homeowners as retired veterinarians Rebecca and James Schmidt, along with their son, Bryan Schmidt. Two handguns were recovered at the scene.

Investigators from the Mundelein Police Department and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force are processing the scene. Police have characterized the event as an isolated incident and stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active.
