Five suspects charged in Lyon‑Corbas prison attacks

Five individuals have been formally charged for a series of attacks against the Lyon‑Corbas prison in the Rhône region of France. The attacks, carried out between June and July 2025, involved the throwing of Molotov cocktails at the prison facility, staff vehicles and nearby homes. The assaults were filmed and posted online along with threatening messages.

Investigations by the Rhône gendarmerie revealed that an incarcerated individual coordinated the assaults, recruiting youths via social‑media platforms. A police operation on a Monday in the Rhône and Loire departments resulted in the arrest of the alleged organizer and the five suspects. Four adults have been placed in custody, while a minor is under judicial supervision.

The Lyon‑Corbas prison, which opened in 2009 with a capacity of 678 places, has been targeted as part of a wider wave of prison‑related violence that erupted in April 2025 across France, including mortar and Kalashnikov attacks on multiple detention centers and a residential area in Isère housing prison staff. The broader investigation linked these incidents to narcotics traffickers, leading to 21 people being charged in May 2025.
