Five-year-old Mikey Catt battles brain cancer after emergency surgery
Five-year-old Mikey Catt is battling brain cancer after his family sought medical answers for persistent, unexplained vomiting. Despite initial blood tests, urine samples, and ultrasounds returning normal results, the family's concerns led to a CT scan at John Hunter Hospital.
The scan revealed a 5.3 centimetre tumour at the base of Mikey's skull, which was exerting pressure on his brain stem and obstructing fluid drainage. Mikey underwent two emergency surgeries, including a nine-and-a-half-hour procedure to remove the mass. Surgeons successfully removed approximately 90 per cent of the tumour, leaving the remaining portion due to its high-risk proximity to blood vessels and the brain stem.
Following the biopsy confirmation of cancer, the family is now looking toward further treatment options in Austria or Florida.
