Fiverr pivots to complex projects amid AI disruption
Fiverr is undergoing a major strategic shift to move away from small, low-cost digital tasks toward complex, high-budget projects as generative artificial intelligence disrupts its core business model. The platform, originally known for five-dollar micro-tasks like logo design, translation, and copywriting, is seeing a significant decline in its traditional marketplace revenue and user base.
In the second quarter of 2026, Fiverr reported revenue of $97.8 million, a 10% decrease compared to the same period the previous year. The company's historical marketplace revenue fell by 15.5%, and active buyers dropped by 21.9% to 2.7 million. Since 2022, the platform has lost over 1.5 million active buyers. Specific categories, such as writing and translation, have seen declines exceeding 24% over the last twelve months as users turn to AI tools like ChatGPT.
Financial indicators reflect these challenges: the company's stock price, which peaked above $300 in early 2021, currently trades around $9. Additionally, CEO Micha Kaufman noted that the integration of Google's Gemini is impacting the platform's organic traffic, further complicating customer acquisition.
