Fjarðabyggð begins solar and wood pellet energy projects

Work has commenced on two innovative renewable energy projects in Reyðarfjörður, Iceland. The initiatives involve the municipality of Fjarðabyggð and are being implemented in collaboration with Alor and Tandraorku.

The first project involves the installation of up to 200 solar cells at Fjarðabyggðarhöllin, with an installed capacity of up to 90 kW. The system is expected to produce approximately 45 MWh of electricity annually, which will be used directly by the facility. The solar energy system is scheduled for installation in autumn 2026.

The second project focuses on a heating station that integrates the use of wood pellets and heat pumps for space heating in municipal buildings. These projects were supported by a grant from the Energy Fund (Orkusjóður) to promote energy transition and savings in municipal operations.
