Fjord film explores social polarization and religious conflict

The film ‘Fjord’, directed by Cristian Mungiu, explores the intense moral and social conflicts between progressive and conservative values. Winner of the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival, the thriller is inspired by a true story set in Norway. It follows a pious Romanian family, led by a father played by Sebastian Stan and a Norwegian mother played by Renate Reinsve, who move to a Norwegian village. Their lives are disrupted when suspicions of abusive educational practices arise due to their strict evangelical beliefs.

Mungiu describes the film as a reflection on Western society, highlighting the polarization and lack of dialogue between radicalized groups. While some critics have accused the director of ambiguity for not taking a side between progressivism and conservatism, Mungiu maintains that the film aims to encourage self-criticism within liberal societies. The narrative examines themes of religious fundamentalism, secularism, and the underlying prejudices that emerge when different belief systems collide.
