Fjord Line reports record summer growth amid Norwegian maritime debates
Fjord Line has reported its most successful summer to date, noting significant traffic growth on routes between Norway and Denmark, specifically connecting Bergen, Stavanger, and Kristiansand to Hirtshals.
CEO Heidi Nag Flikka highlighted a marked increase in Norwegian travelers to Denmark and a surge in international tourists visiting Norway. Currently, nearly 60 percent of passengers on Fjord Line's Norwegian routes are international visitors.
In separate maritime and economic developments, political discussions in Norway are addressing challenges in the shipping and fishing sectors. Bård Ludvig Thorheim of the Høyre party has called for the removal of the CO2 tax on the fishing fleet. He argues that the specific Norwegian tax creates economic incentives for vessels to refuel in foreign ports, such as those in Shetland, which may drain value and jobs from local coastal communities like Øygarden.
Additionally, local concerns have been raised regarding ferry reliability in Finnmark. While capacity on the Hasvik-Øksfjord route has increased by approximately 50 percent, residents continue to face issues with cancellations and full departures, prompting calls for better staffing and reliability plans from the county municipality.
