Fjord selected as Romania's official entry for 2027 Oscars

Romania has officially selected the film ‘Fjord’, written and directed by Cristian Mungiu, as its submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards. The decision was made unanimously by the selection committee of the Romanian National Film Centre (CNC).

‘Fjord’ recently won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, a distinction that makes it eligible for Oscar consideration under new Academy rules regarding major festival winners. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. The narrative follows a Romanian family that moves to a small village in Norway, exploring themes of cultural clash and the intervention of child welfare services.

The film is a multi-country co-production involving Romania, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Following its release in France in August 2026, it is scheduled for a general theatrical release in Romania this winter.
