Mexico faces Olympic qualification battles at Flag Football World Championship

The 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championship in Düsseldorf, Germany, has reached critical stages for Olympic qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

In the women's division, the top-ranked Mexican national team saw its undefeated streak broken in the semifinals, losing 20-6 to Canada. This result moves Canada into the final against the United States, while Mexico must now compete in a third-place playoff against Great Britain to secure an Olympic berth.

In the men's division, Mexico's path to the Olympics was also challenged following a 42-40 semifinal loss to the United States. Despite the defeat, the Mexican men's team retains a chance to qualify for the 2028 Olympics by winning their upcoming third-place match.

Other notable performances include Spain's competitive showing in the women's bracket and Panama's advancement to the quarterfinals. The tournament serves as a primary pathway for nations to secure spots in the sport's Olympic debut.
