Flai Cgil condemns exploitation after Tunisian worker's suicide
The Flai Cgil trade union has expressed profound grief following the suicide of Yacine, a 24-year-old Tunisian worker, on August 28 in the Villaggio Don Bosco worker housing area near Lucera.
Matteo Bellegoni, head of the union's migration and legality department, stated that the death was not a mere fatality but the result of a system of non-reception and exploitation that destroys the physical and mental health of migrant workers. The union highlighted that Yacine's psychological state had been severely compromised by years of living in the Borgo Mezzanone ghetto, facing labor exploitation and bureaucratic difficulties regarding documentation.
Bellegoni noted that the daily ferocity of these conditions causes psychological trauma similar to that experienced by people fleeing war zones. The union is calling for the definitive end of the ghetto system, arguing that simply moving people out of camps is insufficient if they are not granted dignity and visibility within society.
