Maracanã overcrowding investigation launched by Rio Public Ministry
The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), through its specialized sports group Gaedest, has opened a civil inquiry to investigate suspected overcrowding at the Maracanã stadium. The investigation focuses on matches involving Flamengo and Fluminense between December 2025 and August 2026, where evidence suggests the number of tickets issued for certain sectors may have exceeded their physical capacity.
Authorities have notified several entities, including both clubs, the stadium administrator Fla-Flu Serviços S.A., the Military Police's specialized stadium battalion (Bepe), the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation (Ferj), and ticket logistics companies FutebolCard and Cognitive Ruptix Solution. The MPRJ is requesting detailed breakdowns of all tickets issued—including sales, complimentary passes, and free entries—to compare them against the actual number of people entering each sector.
In separate sports news, Flamengo is preparing for a high-stakes Brasileirão match against Botafogo at the Maracanã. Flamengo's coach, Leonardo Jardim, maintains an undefeated record in Rio derbies, though the team faces absences including Bruno Henrique and Gonzalo Plata. Meanwhile, the club is also implementing budgetary adjustments, limiting new transfer investments following a R$ 33.8 million deficit in the first half of the year.
Additionally, the Conmebol has confirmed the schedule for the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals, featuring Brazilian clubs Fluminense, Palmeiras, Corinthians, and Flamengo.
