Flamengo faces River Plate in pre‑season friendly in Portugal
Brazilian club Flamengo and Argentine side River Plate will meet on 3 July 2026 at the Estádio Algarve in Portugal as part of the Troféu do Algarve pre‑season tournament. The match, scheduled for 15:30 Brasília time, serves as preparation for Flamengo ahead of the resumption of official competitions after the 2026 World Cup break and offers both teams a chance to test tactics and integrate new players.
The encounter revives the 2019 Libertadores final, the only three players still on the field from that showdown are Flamengo’s Bruno Henrique and River’s Lucas Martínez and Rafael Borré, although Borré will not travel, having returned to Inter Milan. Flamengo coach Leonardo Jardim said, “Esses amistosos são essenciais para o nosso entrosamento antes de voltarmos para a competição oficial.” The expected Flamengo line‑up includes Rossi; Emerson Royal, João Victor, Vitão, Ayrton Lucas; Pulgar, Jorginho, Saúl; Luiz Araújo, Samuel Lino, Pedro and Bruno Henrique. The game will be broadcast on Band, Sportv 2, Ge TV (YouTube) and Premiere.
Flamengo’s pre‑season program continues with matches against Lausanne‑Sport (Switzerland) on 8 July and Benfica (Portugal) on 11 July.
