Flamengo projects 40 million reais deficit for 2026

Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, has announced a revised budget projection for 2026, forecasting a deficit of 40 million reais. This shift from an expected 180 million reais surplus is attributed to lower-than-expected sporting results, high player acquisition costs, and lower revenue from athlete transfers.

Bap admitted that the club's financial planning faced setbacks, specifically citing the 315.7 million reais investment in Lucas Paquetá. He stated he would not have proceeded with that signing had the club known certain revenues, such as the naming rights for Maracanã and a master sponsorship, would not materialize. Additionally, the club missed targets in player sales, earning approximately 22 million reais from the transfers of Lorran, Victor Hugo, and Guilherme, far below the 250 million reais goal.

To stabilize finances, Flamengo plans to adopt an ultraconservative approach during the first transfer window of 2027, prioritizing free agents to avoid transfer fees. The club aims to generate between 40 and 45 million euros (approximately 238 to 267 million reais) through player sales, though leadership maintains they will not sell players essential to the team's sporting performance.
