Brazilian football clubs challenge sports betting ban in Supreme Court
Brazilian football clubs are mounting a legal challenge against a government provisional measure that prohibits fixed-odds sports betting and its advertising. The measure, signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, aims to shut down betting sites and remove related branding by October 5.
Flamengo has emerged as a leading opponent, successfully petitioning the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to participate as amicus curiae in ongoing legal actions. The club, along with others like Botafogo, São Paulo, and Fluminense, argues that the sudden ban threatens the financial stability of the sport. Flamengo estimates a direct loss of approximately R$ 430 million and warns that the total impact on Brazilian football could reach R$ 2.5 billion.
Club officials highlight that sponsorship revenue from companies like Betano is vital not only for professional squads but also for funding women's football, youth academies, and Olympic sports. Flamengo's president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, expressed concern regarding the ability to meet existing financial commitments, such as player transfer installments, if these revenues are lost. Industry representatives are also seeking a transition period to mitigate the economic shock to the sports ecosystem.
