Flamengo president shifts strategy to target free agents
Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, has announced a new financial and transfer strategy for the club. Moving away from previous statements regarding high-expenditure investments, the president now plans to focus on acquiring players who are free agents or nearing the end of their contracts to avoid high transfer fees.
This shift follows a projected budget deficit of R$ 40 million for 2026, a significant reversal from the previously anticipated R$ 180 million surplus. Bap attributed the financial challenges to several factors, including the failed transfer of Plata to Dynamo Moscow, the uncompleted sale of the Maracanã naming rights, and the R$ 315 million acquisition of Lucas Paquetá.
To balance the accounts, the club aims to generate between 40 and 45 million euros (approximately R$ 272 million) through player sales. Bap also noted that potential federal restrictions on sports betting could impact the budgets of many clubs, further necessitating a cautious approach to market spending.
