Flamingo migration begins in Spain
The common flamingo is entering its period of high mobility across Spain and the Mediterranean. While these birds remain concentrated in nesting sites during spring and summer, they begin a dispersive and migratory pattern during autumn and late winter.
In Spain, the Fuente de Piedra lagoon in Malaga serves as the primary breeding colony and one of the most significant in the Mediterranean. Other key habitats include the Ebro Delta, Doñana, and various inland lagoons in the La Mancha region. According to 2021 census data from SEO/BirdLife, more than 20,000 breeding pairs nest in Spain, a figure that can reach 30,000 in favorable years.
Globally, BirdLife International estimates the breeding population at between 550,000 and 680,000 individuals, with 71,800 to 265,000 nesting in Europe. Despite their large numbers, the species is classified as near-threatened.
