Flamingos arrive in Thoothukudi for winter migration

Large numbers of flamingos have arrived at the salt pans along the East Coast Road in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, marking the start of the winter migration season. The saltwater reservoirs and abundant food resources in the salt pans provide an ideal environment for the birds to feed and rest.

In nearby Perungulam village, migratory waterbirds, including species believed to have traveled from Siberia, have made an early appearance. Bird researcher Thomas Madhibalan of the Muthu Nagar Nature Trust noted that Perungulam is unique in the district because its bird season typically begins between July and October, earlier than other ponds in Tamil Nadu which generally see arrivals starting in October.
