Flanders faces shortage of qualified teachers

In Flanders, approximately 30% of teachers in classrooms lack the specific diploma required for their assigned subject. This figure is composed of two distinct groups: 23% of teachers who have completed a teaching degree but lack the necessary subject specialization, and 7% who have not completed a teaching degree at all.

The shortage is most acute in specific sectors. In primary education, 19% of teachers lack the required competency certificate, while in secondary education, the figure rises to 38%. The situation is most critical in special education, where 42% of teachers do not hold the necessary qualifications, affecting students with disabilities or behavioral challenges.
