Flanders gas phase-out risks higher costs for remaining users

Flanders' plans to phase out natural gas by 2050 may lead to higher costs for households that remain connected to the gas grid the longest. As more residents switch to heat pumps or heat networks, the fixed costs of maintaining and managing the existing gas infrastructure may be distributed among a smaller group of remaining users.

During discussions in the Flemish Parliament, a study was cited warning that gas network tariffs for these remaining users could potentially increase by up to 80 percent by 2050. While this figure is a scenario rather than a guaranteed price hike, it highlights a significant financial challenge for policymakers and regulators as they manage the gradual decommissioning of the distribution network.
