Flanders government allocates €2 million annually to Antwerp Zoo and Planckendael

The Flemish government has announced a budget reallocation to mitigate planned subsidy cuts for Antwerp Zoo and Planckendael park. Between 2027 and 2029, both facilities will receive €2 million annually, totaling €6 million over the three-year period.

The funds are being transferred from the mobility budget, specifically the commuter fund managed by Minister Annick De Ridder, to the tourism budget. This move covers approximately 59 percent of the previously announced €3.4 million annual reduction from the environment and tourism sectors.

Despite this relief, the Royal Zoological Society Antwerp (KMDA), which operates both sites, faces a remaining annual funding gap of €1.4 million compared to previous support levels. KMDA Director Dries Herpoelaert expressed gratitude for the recognition of the institutions' scientific and social roles but noted that the organization must still implement cost-cutting measures, including staff layoffs.
