Flanders implements new agricultural and nature area plans

The Flemish Government is navigating internal tensions as it moves toward a new plan aimed at increasing both agricultural and nature areas. While coalition partners have reached a temporary truce regarding the airport dossier and planned billion-euro savings, underlying friction remains between the N-VA and the Vooruit/CD&V parties.

In parallel, the Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research (ILVO) is conducting research into farm composting at the Hansbeke agro-ecology experimental platform. A proposed new legal framework in Flanders would allow farmers to compost agricultural and natural waste streams on their own farms. This initiative aims to improve soil quality and reduce dependence on external fertilizers by mixing crop residues and grass clippings with carbon-rich materials like wood chips and straw. Under the proposed rules, farmers could compost individually or in groups of up to three, using materials from their own farms as well as from nature and forest management.
