Flanders launches inclusive tourism initiative for visually impaired travelers
The Flanders region in Belgium is implementing the ‘Selfie for All’ initiative to improve accessibility for blind and visually impaired travelers. Through a collaboration with organizations such as the Brailleliga, the tourism body Visit Flanders is installing 50 specialized tactile floor plates across 24 cities and locations.
These plates are designed to help users find the ideal standing position to capture photos with landmarks in the background. The system integrates haptic orientation with digital technology; users can use the free NaviLens app to scan color codes from a distance, receiving guidance via sound and vibrations. Additionally, the plates provide audio information regarding the history and significance of the specific location.
Installations are currently underway in sites including the Grote Markt in Mechelen, the Gravensteen in Ghent, and the Zwin Nature Park on the North Sea coast. More than half of the plates have already been installed.
