Flash floods devastate Himalayan regions of India and Bangladesh

Extreme rainfall across South Asia has pushed more than 600 rivers above flood warning levels, triggering flash floods that have destroyed villages, homes and crops in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India's Himalayan states.

In Afghanistan, villages such as Dur Baba saw kitchens collapse and houses crumble under sudden deluges. In Bangladesh, a flash flood in Chattogram killed poultry, flooded paddy fields and razed family homes. In India's Arunachal Pradesh, a cloudburst on 24 June 2026 ravaged the NEEPCO Colony in Possa, damaging infrastructure and affecting thousands of residents.

Experts warn that delayed government investment in early‑warning systems and climate‑resilient infrastructure leaves communities to fend for themselves. Dr. Hosam Faysal of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said, “waiting to respond to extreme needs we can see coming only once they arrive will cost lives.”
