Gardening guide: Frost-resistant plants, herb preservation, and invasive species regulations

Gardening advice and regulations highlight various aspects of plant care and legal compliance. New breeding advancements have introduced frost-resistant exotic varieties, such as the 'Scarlet Fire' Cornus kousa, which can withstand temperatures below -28 °C, and the colorful Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun'.

For low-maintenance gardens, certain perennials and annuals are recommended due to their ability to self-sow. Additionally, seasonal tasks include preserving herbs like basil through salt preservation to maintain flavor and color during winter. For autumn balcony displays, tropical Celosia varieties offer vibrant alternatives to traditional heather.

On the regulatory side, gardeners must be aware of invasive species prohibited by European and Czech laws. Plants such as Impatiens glandulifera and Giant Hogweed are restricted; the latter can cause skin damage when its sap reacts with UV light. From August 2025, new restrictions will also apply to Japanese knotweed and related species.
