Flavio Bolsonaro nominated; AI video and Brazil‑Argentina diplomatic row

The Liberal Party (PL) held its national convention on 25 July 2026 at the Mercado Pago Hall in the Arena Pacaembu, São Paulo. During the event the party formally nominated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro as its presidential candidate, positioning him as the heir to his father’s political legacy.

A deep‑fake video generated with artificial intelligence that showed former President Jair Bolsonaro speaking was projected at the convention, prompting legal challenges over possible violations of Brazil’s electoral rules on synthetic media.

Argentine President Javier Milei attended the convention and delivered a thirty‑minute speech condemning President Lula and what he called “socialist threats.” Brazil’s foreign ministry responded by recalling its ambassador from Buenos Aires and summoning the Argentine envoy, creating a diplomatic crisis between the two nations.

Earlier in the week Brazil’s Itamaraty denied visas to two U.S. State Department officials who planned to travel to Brazil ahead of the October election. Flávio Bolsonaro also met with 42 foreign ambassadors, repeating false claims that Brazil’s electronic voting machines are linked to the Venezuelan company Smartmatic, a claim repeatedly rejected by the Superior Electoral Court.

A BTG/Nexus poll released after the convention showed incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula at 39 % support and Flávio Bolsonaro at 35 %, indicating a tight presidential race.
