German households need hybrid inverters and storage for solar power during outages

Longer power outages are rare in Germany but do occur, most recently in Berlin and Reutlingen. A common misconception is that a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system will keep a home powered when the public grid fails. In reality, the PV inverter automatically disconnects the system from the house network for safety, so no electricity flows from the roof.

To obtain backup power, owners must install a hybrid inverter with a built‑in emergency‑power function and a battery storage unit. Expert Thomas Heberlein of the Initiative Elektro+ explains that this safety measure protects line workers and that newer hybrid inverters often already include the necessary backup capability. He advises households to decide which essential appliances—such as refrigerators or lights—should stay on, noting that high‑consumption devices like electric‑vehicle chargers are usually unsuitable for emergency use.

Planning a PV system with these features is considerably cheaper than retrofitting a separate backup solution after installation.
