Commercial fleet operators face challenges in identifying specific drivers within shared vehicle systems. While GPS technology tracks vehicle location, speed, and fuel usage, it often fails to link these metrics to individual drivers. This gap complicates accident investigations, fuel-efficiency programs, and the accuracy of driver safety scores.

Several methods exist to authenticate driver identity, including iButton or key fobs, RFID cards, and mobile-app logins. However, each method has limitations, such as the potential for fobs or cards to be shared between colleagues or the dependency on personal mobile devices and signal strength.

Additionally, identifying whether a vehicle is equipped with a tracking device can be done by reviewing documentation, inspecting for unusual wiring near the fuse box or dashboard, or checking for plug-in trackers. Professional installation may make devices difficult to spot through simple visual inspection.
