Fleischerei Wanke closes after 93 years in Schladming
The traditional Fleischerei Wanke butchery in Schladming is closing its doors on September 12 after 93 years of operation. Founded in 1933, the business has been run within the family for decades, with the current owner having taken over in 1989.
Key factors contributing to the closure include a lack of succession, increasing bureaucratic requirements, and labor shortages. The business was particularly well-known for its juniper bacon (Wacholderspeck), produced using traditional methods in the facility's old smokehouse.
While the physical shop in Schladming will close, the production of its specialty products is expected to continue. Andreas Spanberger, who operates a family business in Gröbming, has been identified as the successor to take over production and preserve the traditional recipes and craftsmanship.
