Fleming siblings' fundraising campaign reaches R$ 4 million
A fundraising campaign for siblings Pedro and Tiago Fleming, from Acre, Brazil, has reached R$ 4 million. The family is working toward a total goal of R$ 5.2 million to fund a clinical gene therapy study in the United States.
The brothers suffer from limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2C (LGMDC2C), a rare genetic condition caused by alterations in the SGCG gene. This condition leads to a progressive loss of muscle strength and can eventually compromise mobility.
The clinical study in the U.S. is estimated to cost approximately US$ 1 million, and the boys have been selected as one of only four participants worldwide for this specific research. The family, led by their mother Fabiula Albuquerque Fleming, has issued an appeal for continued donations and social media sharing to bridge the remaining R$ 1.2 million gap.
