Flemish heritage sites face threats from subsidy cuts
Heritage sites and museums in Flanders are facing significant financial challenges due to announced subsidy cuts by the Flemish government.
Provincial Deputy David Coppens has criticized the decision to reduce provincial heritage subsidies by 3.9 million euros, calling it a “pure breach of promise” by Flemish Heritage Minister Caroline Gennez. The cuts specifically impact the Flemish Ardennen region, threatening sites such as the Ename archaeological park, the Velzeke archeological center, and the Zwalm windmill site. Coppens noted that while the province is investing heavily in these locations, the annual operating costs for Ename, Velzeke, and the MOLA expertise center total approximately four million euros, making provincial support indispensable.
Similarly, the Museum for Older Techniques (MOT) in Grimbergen reported that it will lose one-third of its Flemish operating subsidies, amounting to 90,000 euros, starting next year. Curator Steven De Waele warned that this follows a previous 5% reduction and will lead to “great consequences,” including reduced services, less attention to collections, and fewer visitors. The museum is currently considering drastic measures, such as closing parts of the facility, to manage the shortfall.
