Flemish municipalities adopt GIS tool for strategic de-paving
A new GIS-based tool called the de-paving scanner, developed by Breekijzer and Trage Wegen, is being used by Flemish municipalities to identify strategic areas for removing pavement.
The methodology helps local governments detect opportunities for watercourse restoration, urban greening to mitigate heat stress, and improved water infiltration to reduce sewage system pressure. It also assists in linking de-paving efforts to planned infrastructure projects.
To date, thirty-nine Flemish municipalities, three inter-municipalities, and one GIS software company have utilized the scanner during workshops conducted with the Department of Environment.
