Flight attendants observe passenger footwear for safety assessment

Flight attendants perform a rapid assessment of passengers upon boarding to ensure safety and security during a flight. This process involves identifying Able-Bodied Passengers (ABPs)—individuals who are physically fit, agile, or possess specialized professional skills such as doctors, police officers, or military personnel.

By creating a mental list of these key passengers, crew members prepare for potential emergencies or unusual incidents. Part of this observation includes monitoring passengers' footwear. Rather than assessing fashion, attendants look at shoes to determine how they might impact a safe evacuation. For instance, high heels are viewed as a potential hazard during emergency procedures, as they can hinder movement and pose risks to both the wearer and others.
