Flight disruptions cause rising passenger costs and legal claims

A survey by travel-tech company AirHelp reveals the significant financial and emotional toll of flight disruptions on passengers. According to the study, which surveyed 1,996 passengers across several countries including Germany, France, the USA, and Brazil, 73% of travelers incurred additional costs due to delays or cancellations. On average, these extra expenses—such as rebookings, lost wages, meals, and unplanned hotel stays—amount to 514 euros per person globally. In Germany, the average additional cost is higher, at 619 euros per person.

Parallel to these rising costs, there is a significant increase in legal action against airlines. Data shows that over 121,000 compensation claims were filed at 19 courts located near major airports, marking a 44% increase compared to five years ago. Experts predict that litigation involving delays, cancellations, and poor service will reach record levels by 2026. Many passengers report difficulties in receiving unbureaucratic reimbursements from airlines, often leading to prolonged disputes and legal proceedings.
