Flight mode regulations remain mandatory for passengers

Despite some regulatory bodies like the European Union gradually allowing mobile services on flights, the requirement for passengers to switch smartphones to flight mode remains in effect, particularly during takeoff and landing.

Contrary to popular belief, cabin crews do not use specialized radio monitoring devices to detect violations; enforcement relies entirely on visual inspections. Passengers who refuse to comply with crew instructions face potential removal from the aircraft, a consequence previously seen in the 2011 incident involving actor Alec Baldwin.

While the instructions are legally binding, pilots and investigations by the FAA have found no conclusive scientific evidence that active smartphones cause direct interference with cockpit navigation or communication systems.
