Flinders University researchers develop web-based cardiac rehab for women

Researchers at Flinders University have developed a web-based program called CREW (Cardiac Rehabilitation Especially for Women) to improve access to cardiac rehabilitation for women in rural and remote areas. The program was tested through the CHAP Project (Country Heart Attack Prevention) to evaluate its delivery and acceptance among women with cardiovascular disease and their clinicians.

A study involving 40 women in rural or remote South Australia between November 2023 and November 2024 showed an 82.5% initiation rate and a 60% completion rate for the program. The CREW program utilizes telehealth and four educational modules designed to support self-management.

Dr. Joyce Ramos noted that the lack of women-focused programs acts as a major barrier to care. The study findings suggest that gender-tailored, home-based telehealth approaches can empower women to engage with their heart health while addressing resource pressures within health systems.
