Flinders University study reveals toilet flushing releases aerosols

A study by researchers at Flinders University has revealed that flushing a toilet can release aerosols and bioaerosols into the surrounding air. By analyzing 22 previous studies, researchers found that the turbulence created by water flow can propel tiny particles into the air, where they can remain suspended for at least 20 seconds.

In some instances, these particles reached heights of approximately 1.63 meters, placing them within the breathing zone of a standing adult. These aerosols may contain various microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses, originating from water contamination or the toilet bowl surface itself. The volume of water used and the level of microbial load are factors that influence the amount of aerosols produced.

Lead author Lira Adiyani explains that the flushing process creates the turbulence necessary for this release. While researchers recommend closing the toilet lid before flushing as a simple precautionary measure to reduce exposure, they note that a lid does not guarantee aerosols will remain entirely contained within the toilet.
