Flipei sues São Paulo institutions over alleged censorship

The Festa Literária Pirata das Editoras Independentes (Flipei) has filed a lawsuit against the Fundação Theatro Municipal and the organization Sustenidos following the unilateral cancellation of its 2025 event in São Paulo. The festival alleges political censorship and breach of contract after the municipal government terminated the agreement for the use of Praça das Artes just five days before the event was scheduled to begin.

At the time of the cancellation, officials from the Fundação Theatro Municipal argued that the festival had a political-ideological character. Flipei countered that the move was an attempt to penalize initiatives that do not align with the current administration's political preferences. Despite the sudden relocation to the Espaço Cultural Elza Soares and other sites, the 2025 edition drew a record crowd of over 50,000 visitors.

The lawsuit, currently being processed in the 5th Special Court of the Public Treasury, seeks R$ 40.9 thousand in material damages to cover costs incurred by the abrupt change of venue. The organizers stated the legal action aims to establish the principle that public cultural facilities should not be used to restrict initiatives based on ideological divergence.
