DRC: Félix Tshisekedi launches national dialogue for peace and state refoundation
President Félix Tshisekedi has launched a national dialogue aimed at peace, cohesion, and the refoundation of the state in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The process is designed to last a maximum of three months and will follow a decentralized approach, beginning with consultations across the 26 provinces before culminating in sessions in Kinshasa.
The initiative has drawn varied reactions. Political parties such as BUREC and ARDEV have expressed support, viewing it as a necessary break from past political arrangements. Local groups, including the Fizi-Itombwe notables and the Rutshuru youth council, have also welcomed the inclusive methodology. Conversely, the opposition coalition Article 64 has rejected the consultations, arguing they are merely calibrated maneuvers by the presidency rather than a true inclusive dialogue.
Key parameters of the dialogue include the exclusion of armed groups fighting the constitutional order. Internationally, Angolan President João Lourenço has voiced support for the inter-Congolese process, a move seen as aligning with the African Union's peace-building mandates. Meanwhile, civil society actors have formed the 'Alliance citoyenne pour la Patrie' to provide an independent voice during the ongoing national crises.
