Félix Tshisekedi's Grand Chancellor ceremony postponed
The ceremony to award President Félix Tshisekedi the title of Grand Chancellor of Universities and Higher Institutes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been postponed. Originally scheduled for September 30, 2026, in Lubumbashi, the event will now take place at a later date to be announced officially.
The decision was announced by the Minister of Higher Education, University, Scientific Research and Innovations, Marie-Thérèse Sombo. The postponement follows a tragic plane crash that occurred on September 25, 2026, in Kenge, within the Kwango province. The accident resulted in the disappearance of several individuals, including prominent figures from the Congolese military justice system.
Minister Sombo expressed deep compassion for the victims' families and the nation during this period of mourning. The ministry thanked various authorities, partners, and academic institutions for their understanding regarding the delay.
