Flix expands German rail services with 2.4 billion euro investment
Flix is significantly expanding its rail and business travel operations in Germany. The company's rail division, Flixtrain, announced at the InnoTrans trade fair that it will introduce hourly service between Hamburg and Berlin starting in 2027. The company aims to offer faster travel times than Deutsche Bahn's ICE trains on this route.
To support this growth, Flix is investing approximately 2.4 billion euros to expand its fleet. This includes doubling its current capacity by 2028 through a mix of modernized used trains and 65 newly ordered high-speed Talgo 230 train sets, with locomotives provided by Siemens. The expansion strategy includes a tiered service model featuring 'Classic', 'Comfort', and 'Star' classes, with the 'Star' high-speed trains expected to debut in 2028.
Beyond the Hamburg-Berlin corridor, Flix plans to connect more regions, including the Munich metropolitan area, to its long-distance network. Additionally, Flix has launched 'Flix for Business', a digital booking portal designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) manage and settle business travel for buses and trains across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland without requiring complex internal management systems.
