Floating dairy farm in Rotterdam put up for sale
The world's first floating dairy farm, located in the Port of Rotterdam, is being put up for sale. Opened in May 2019 by Peter and Minke van Wingerden, the facility was designed as a sustainable agricultural solution that does not require land. The project involved a four-million-euro investment and currently houses 28 Dutch MRI cows.
The owners cited several reasons for the closure, including the expiration of their lease and plans by the city and port to redevelop the area for residential housing. Additionally, the owners expressed frustration with the local environmental department, DCMR, describing their demands regarding the farm's low-emission rubber flooring as “ridiculous” and “outdated.”
