Floating forested island drifts 30km in British Columbia

A massive floating island covered in mature trees has been discovered in British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir after traveling approximately 30 kilometers. The landmass, measuring roughly 70 meters wide and 140 meters long, covers nearly one hectare.

Initially, the phenomenon caused confusion, with some observers suggesting the footage might be AI-generated. However, satellite imagery and investigations by BC Hydro confirmed the existence of the floating mass. The island, composed of wood, soil, and vegetation, likely detached from the edge of the reservoir.

Driven by strong winds, the island drifted for about two weeks before eventually coming to rest along the shore in the Ospika Arm of the reservoir.
