Flock Safety CEO claims online backlash is driven by Russian bots

Garrett Langley, CEO of the surveillance company Flock Safety, claimed during a private conference for the International Association of Chiefs of Police that online opposition to his company is artificial. According to leaked audio obtained by 404 Media, Langley asserted that social media resistance is being driven by anonymous Russian bots and that opponents are being paid to criticize the company.

Langley suggested that online chatter regarding Flock has decreased significantly, noting a 50 percent drop following a Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian data center. He characterized the backlash as astroturfed and stated he would prefer to avoid future press interviews.

Flock Safety operates automatic license plate readers (ALPR) and video surveillance technology. The company has over 144,000 cameras deployed across the United States. The technology has faced criticism from privacy advocates, including the ACLU, due to concerns regarding precision tracking and the ability of law enforcement to access data without a warrant.
