Flock Safety offers employee buyouts amid municipal contract cancellations

Flock Safety, a San Francisco-based surveillance technology company, has launched a voluntary employee separation program. The company is offering severance packages to staff, with employees having until October 2 to decide whether to depart. Internal communications suggest the company expects to grant buyouts to the majority of applicants, which could include a significant portion of its approximately 1,500 employees.

The move comes as the company faces mounting pressure from municipalities and privacy advocates. Several cities have recently terminated or declined to renew contracts for Flock’s automated license plate reader technology, citing concerns over data retention, surveillance oversight, and civil liberties. Organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union have criticized the technology for creating searchable databases of travel habits without sufficient judicial safeguards.

In addition to losing municipal contracts, Flock is reportedly facing increased expenses due to a wave of vandalism targeting its camera hardware. These factors have created financial and operational challenges for the company, which reached a valuation of over $8 billion in April.
