Flood risks monitored in Angola and Mozambique ahead of rainy season
Authorities in Angola and Mozambique are taking preventive measures ahead of the rainy season. In the Navegantes municipality of Angola, a multi-sectoral commission led by municipal administrator João Tomás António conducted field visits to assess critical infrastructure. The inspection focused on drainage ditches and access roads in the Calombutão, Mira-mar, Ilha, and Viva Paz neighborhoods to identify necessary interventions to mitigate flood risks.
In Mozambique, the National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH) has issued a moderate flood alert for the Maputo River basin. This follows the scheduled annual discharge from the Pongolapoort Dam in South Africa, set to begin on November 2, 2026. Flow rates are expected to peak at 700 m³/s on November 8.
Technical estimates suggest water levels at the Madubula hydrometric station could rise 2 meters above alert levels by November 13. This poses a threat to agricultural fields and road circulation in the villages of Catuane, Salamanga, and Tinonganine. Authorities have advised riverside communities to avoid crossing the riverbed and urged farmers to anticipate harvests in high-risk areas.
