Flood warnings issued in Nigeria and Ghana amid rising water levels

Authorities in West Africa are issuing flood warnings as rising water levels threaten communities in Nigeria and Ghana.

In Kano, Nigeria, the state government is responding to warnings from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) regarding flood risks this rainy season. Commissioner Dahiru Hashim stated that the administration has conducted multi-agency assessments of dams and is rehabilitating drainage systems and flood channels. The government is also conducting waste evacuation through ‘Operation Tsaf-Tsaf’ to prevent drainage obstructions.

In Ghana, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has alerted residents in the Kumbungu District as water levels at the Nawuni intake have reached 23.85 feet, placing them within a critical flood range. Officials are monitoring the White Volta for potential overflows, particularly if the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso begins water spillage. NADMO has pre-positioned a Rapid Response Team in Walewale to assist with potential evacuations and emergency operations.
