Flooding disrupts travel across Edinburgh and the Lothians

Heavy overnight rainfall and thunderstorms have caused widespread flash flooding across Edinburgh and the Lothians. The intense downpours have resulted in significant travel disruptions, with several major and minor roads submerged in areas including Morningside, East Calder, North Berwick, and Tranent.

In East Lothian, flooding has affected routes in Musselburgh and Tranent, forcing drivers to divert or abandon journeys. The East Lothian Council reported that the volume and intensity of the rain put “significant pressure” on the drainage network. Localized flooding has also impacted recreational areas, such as the Winterfield Golf Club in Dunbar, which was forced to close due to waterlogged greens.

In Edinburgh, flooding has impacted the Cameron Toll roundabout and Niddrie Mains Road, while a pedestrian tunnel was reportedly flooded. Lothian Buses has implemented diversions for several services, including the 32 and 36 routes in the Bankhead area, to navigate road closures.
