Flooding hits Paraná municipalities as Iguaçu River rises

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding across parts of Paraná, Brazil, particularly affecting areas near the Iguaçu River. In São Mateus do Sul, precipitation exceeded 195 millimeters over two days, leading to flooding on rural roads and forcing families to seek shelter with relatives. The Iguaçu River in this region has been rising at a rate of approximately 2 centimeters per hour.

In the Curitiba metropolitan area, the flooding has reached Araucária, where the Iguaçu River rose by more than four meters. The surge caused nearby basins to overflow, inundating homes in the Campina da Barra and Passaúna neighborhoods. Firefighters have utilized boats to rescue families from these areas. Approximately 14 families have been relocated to a municipal gymnasium serving as an emergency shelter.
