Flooding impacts southern Brazil as river levels rise

Heavy rainfall and rising river levels are causing flooding in parts of southern Brazil. In the municipality of Rio Negro, Paraná, the Rio Negro has reached levels above 8 meters, leaving 122 people displaced. While 34 individuals are currently sheltered in a municipal gymnasium, others have sought refuge with relatives. Local authorities remain concerned as the soil is saturated and more rain is forecasted.

In Santa Catarina, the Rio Canoas has reached a flood alert level in Otacílio Costa. Despite a recent pause in rainfall, the river reached 6.17 meters, causing flooding in streets and a local football field. Civil Defense officials noted that the situation remains critical because the river's basin makes drainage difficult, allowing water levels to rise even without active precipitation.
