Guinea floods cause death and displacement in Coyah and Conakry

Severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall has struck the Grand Conakry region and the Coyah prefecture in Guinea, resulting in at least one death, several injuries, and significant property damage. The floods, which occurred between September 18 and 19, 2026, heavily impacted localities such as Coyah, Manéah, and various neighborhoods in Conakry.

In Coyah, the flooding caused the collapse of a bridge in Sambaya and forced many families to evacuate their homes. The National Agency for the Management of Emergencies and Humanitarian Catastrophes (ANGUCH) reported that hundreds of people have been affected, with many seeking temporary shelter at the Coyah Youth House. In Manéah, specifically in the Bananérais area, water levels reached up to three meters in some locations, submerging houses and disrupting transportation.

In Conakry, the heavy rains led to major drainage failures, causing water to overflow onto main roads such as Sonfonia-Lac and Kagbelen, resulting in severe traffic congestion. Emergency services, including the Red Cross, have been deployed to assist trapped residents. Authorities have maintained weather alerts, advising citizens to avoid flooded areas and weakened bridges as heavy rains are expected to continue.
